There is no shortage of published work centered on the medical profession, but there is a reason why much of it is not written by medical students during medical school—it’s a bit hectic…or more like completely crazy, really. It is not the case that Dr. Sandsmark is smarter than her peers, that she uses her time more efficiently, or that she had totally different experiences than the average medical student. No, it is more that she found her experiences in medical school so personally influential and transformative that she felt compelled to share them with the rest of the world in an honest, and often exceptionally vulnerable, personal narrative. While there is plenty to say about all four years of medical school, her memoir primarily focuses on the third year, when students are busy with clinical rotations. It is during this time that medical students transition from rigorous (but predictable) coursework to tumultuous (and unpredictable) clinical work. Medical textbooks can teach students many things, but they cannot prepare them to comfort a panicked family member, manage a frustrated and disruptive patient, or witness their first death. Readers will accompany Dr. Sandsmark as she attempts to counsel patients and families she is not yet ready to counsel and treat patients she is not yet fully trained to treat. Her drive to gain her new patients’ trust, and the situations this places her in, will have readers turning page after page. While medical details are not skirted, the book is largely an account of a medical student’s life, one that offers the type of fresh outlook on medicine that only a doctor in training can provide. Her narrative is crafted through colorful descriptions of her hopes, fears, dreams, and struggles. It is sincere and insightful throughout, although frequently humorous and light-hearted. Join her to discover why medical students feel as if they are just “playing doctor” and why the transition from the “boards to the wards” is a life-changing experience. Although of particular interest to medical students, past, present, and future, the book will appeal to anyone interested in the challenges required to succeed in a high-pressure field like medicine.

As a family medicine resident, I met Emilee during my first month of residency on an OB/GYN rotation (when you read her book you will see this won't surprise you!). Both of us were new interns and learning the ropes of transitioning from 'playing doctor,' as she creatively puts it, to being a 'real doctor.' I was blown away while working alongside Dr. Sandsmark - she is crazy smart, comfortingly funny, and just as compassionate with her patients as she is passionate about the nerdiness of medicine. Learning more about her journey through her well-written, hilarious and thoughtful book reminds me of my own journey through medicine. It's humbling to read and relive many of the moments of our tortuous training. Grateful to be where we are now and still just as excited about what the future holds as when we were studying for our MCATs.I recommend this book to all currently studying for your MCAT; reading this book will give you a glimpse of the future ahead - this won't be the last time you cry or grab a beer (or both) after a test, but it's worth it to continue on. I recommend this to all current medical students - you aren't alone, you will survive! To all current residents, a great read to remind you where you have been (doesn't it feel great to be where you are now?!) and to remember how to include medical students as apart of your team. For current attendings and preceptors, a great read to let you know how much we thank you for all your patience, time and energy - it doesn't go unnoticed and, is in fact, long lasting! Nice job, doc! You made it not only in medicine, but as a 5-star author as well!!

Playing Doctor From the Boards to the Wards Dr Emilee K Sandsmark 9781530393084 Books Reviews
Have known author for years because she and my daughter have been friends since middle school. I just learned of this published work and was excited to read not only because I've known her but because my niece is just completing her 3rd year of med school. Extremely honest, informative and a delightful read. The personality of the author shines brightly with each description of her experiences. I still laugh at the visual imagery she created in her honest and comical style of writing. A must read!
I really enjoyed this book. I heard about it through my son who is a friend of Emilee's but read it because it sounded interesting. I really enjoyed the book. It provides an insight on what it is like to become a doctor, both funny and touching. Having met Emilee I have no doubt she will be a good doctor. However having read the book, I am hopeful she will continue to write and provide insight into her residency.
Emilee perfectly portrays the ups and downs of M3 year! The anxiety, the difficulty fitting in anywhere, the sense of loneliness when your first patient dies--- Emilee is perfectly vulnerable and honest. There is no other book on the medical field that is as real. It was a good reminder to me--a resident, how hard that year was emotionally but also incredibly rewarding it was as well. She has a self deprecating humor that is raw and refreshing. This book is perfect for those in medical school or considering medical school. A definite page turner that is comedy and drama with a smattering of medicine all in one.
If you want to read a real life, hilarious, embarrassing, inspirational book about a 3rd year medical student's bizarre experiences...get this book! I couldn't put it down and recommend it for anyone who wants to go to med school, is curious about the life of a doctor, or just wants to laugh and cry...so anyone and everyone! It's so damn good! I want more stories!
Just like Dr. Sandsmark in her book, I am also about to enter my third year of medical school. I picked up her book to read in the summer before my rotations begin.
I found the way she relayed her experiences engaging and the feelings she experienced (of anxiety, self-doubt, and the elation at eventually succeding) instantly relatable, as I imagine they would be for most medical students. The book makes me excited for the year ahead of me.
I would definitely recommend it to other medical students or anyone that wants to know what it feels like to be a medical student.
This book was captivating and a must read for anyone considering the health care field as a career choice and becoming a physician in particular. Quite honestly anyone that will one day find themselves interacting with a physician as a patient and/or patient advocate will get to know and understand their personal physicians and what they have gone thru and continue to experience. This book was awesome and funny as well as full of suspense. In particular the way the author describes the stressful third year of medical school makes me wonder how anyone can do it without cracking. Her embarrassing experiences she shares with such a humbleness and humor, leaving me the reader to believe that just maybe I could do this doctor thing too!
I hope in the years to come, the story continues and is shared by this wonderful new author.
You have to read this book! It will give you a whole new appreciation for the people courageous enough to endure medical school. Sandsmark makes medicine and her own humanity so accessible you will find yourself grateful that she shared her experiences and emphatically cheering for her as she transforms from student to doctor. Her willingness to pull back the curtain and expose all the raw insecurity that comes with a year of exceptional struggle and heartwarming triumphs is a gift for us all! The lessons she learns and shares with us are applicable to all walks of life and is not reserved solely for those pursuing a medical career. Her ability to unearth hilarity at every turn and at her own expense sets this memoir apart from others in this genre. Read it! You'll love it too!
